About the course
Botany Knowledge for Outdoor Teaching Facilitated by Jessica Moulynox from Backyard Botany This three-part professional learning series invites educators and outdoor practitioners to deepen their understanding of the plant world from foundational botany through to practical plant identification skills you can immediately apply in the field. Across the series, Jessica brings botany to life in an engaging, interactive, and highly accessible way. While each workshop is designed to stand alone, the sessions intentionally build on one another. There is no requirement to attend all three, and you will gain practical value from attending one or two. However, participants will get the greatest depth of understanding and confidence by experiencing the full series. Importantly, by registering for any session, you will also receive access to the recording for on-demand viewing, offering flexibility. This series is suitable for anyone working with groups in the outdoors including teachers, outdoor educators, and facilitators. You will walk away with practical knowledge to enrich your programs and inspire curiosity and care for the environment. Jessica will also be presenting at the OV Conference in July, facilitating an interactive session that draws on this knowledge base. These workshops are not a duplication of that session, they provide valuable foundational learning that will enhance your conference experience. If you can attend all three fantastic. If you can attend one or two Great.
Jessica Moulynox
At Backyard Botany (www.backyard-botony.com) we believe in providing opportunities for you to learn about sustainable living practices. It's becoming increasingly difficult in today's fast paced commercialist world to live in harmony with our local environment. Jessica Moulynox, our head Ethnobotanist has years of experience in identifying and utilising native plants and shares this knowledge during immersive workshops to ignite your senses. Jessica takes tour groups on coastal foraging walks around Phillip Island to introduce people to the native edible plants around us. If this option is too far away, Jessica can travel within Victoria to host a talk on the Victorian local edible plants. Another major service at Backyard Botany is installing native edible garden beds with informational signage into facilities. This creates a sense of connection for students and community members. Creating these green learning spaces is not only good for mental health but also botanical/science education. If you've been feeling disconnected, would like to get away from your screens or just want to learn new skills, these classes and gardens are for you. Jessica's career in Ethnobotany began almost 20 years ago when she learnt how to forage wild native edibles. She has since completed a Bachelor of Environmental Science with a major in plant biology and a minor in Indigenous studies. As a society, our plant knowledge is disappearing and, as an Ethnobotanist Jessica aims to pass on her botanical knowledge in fun interactive workshops. She believes connection to our local landscape is so important for the future of our health and happiness.
